The Second of Three Fast Days
This is a follow-up to the previous blog post.
Last night, observers from the David Area Control Center in the Jerusalem District (View 2000) identified serious footage in an alley in the city of Aitka, Jerusalem, in which a suspect was identified abusing a cat while grabbing it by the tail and throwing it in the air.The incident was identified by the observers, and thanks to their alertness and quick response, a report was quickly forwarded to the David Area Police and Jerusalem Border Police soldiers who were operating in the area to locate the suspect in the wrongdoing. The police quickly arrived at the scene, located the suspect (17, a resident of Jerusalem), and he was arrested by them and taken for questioning in the David area. The police said, "Professional activity, a combination of technological capabilities and human alertness of the observers and police officers in the field enabled a rapid response, the arrest of the suspect and the opening of an investigation, with the aim of preventing further harm and sending a clear message - the Israel Police will operate with zero tolerance against any manifestation of violence, towards humans and animals."It was also stated: "The Israel Police view any harm to animals with great seriousness. This is a serious and unacceptable offense. The police treat cases of this type with the utmost seriousness and act resolutely to bring those involved to justice."
Especially in light of what keeps coming out about the abuse of women and children by the police in the public sphere, this would be laughable, but it's not a laughing matter. And this is not animal abuse. It was a silly thing to do, but it did not hurt the cat, who walked nonchalantly away afterwards and it was not as characterized "thrown into the air by the tail." Instead it was pulled down off of what looked like a caspomat machine. It clearly was not meant to be an act of cruelty.
It seems to me that the police are in dire need of education about what constitutes real cruelty and abuse and what real justice looks like and the part they play in all of it.
