Parashat Eikev 5776

22 Menachem Av 5776
Erev Shabbat Kodesh
Shabbat Mevorchim

We're one week before Rosh Chodesh Elul and the beginning of the Forty Days of Awe. Time to start getting serious. Here are a few quotes from the parashah which really stand out in my mind.

...You shall faithfully observe all the Instruction that I enjoin upon you today, that you may thrive and increase and be able to possess the land that the LORD promised on oath to your fathers.

...Bear in mind that the LORD your God disciplines you just as a man disciplines his son. Therefore keep the commandments of the LORD your God: walk in His ways and revere Him. For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land,....

...When you have eaten your fill, give thanks to the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you. Take care lest you forget the LORD your God and fail to keep His commandments, His rules, and His laws, which I enjoin upon you today.

...Remember, never forget, how you provoked the LORD your God to anger in the wilderness: from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you reached this place, you have continued defiant toward the LORD.

...And when the LORD sent you on from Kadesh-barnea, saying, “Go up and take possession of the land that I am giving you,” you flouted the command of the LORD your God; you did not put your trust in Him and did not obey Him. As long as I have known you, you have been defiant toward the LORD.

...And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God demand of you? Only this: to revere the LORD your God, to walk only in His paths, to love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and soul, keeping the LORD’s commandments and laws, which I enjoin upon you today, for your good.

...Love, therefore, the LORD your God, and always keep His charge, His laws, His rules, and His commandments.

From the Haftarah:

I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, They shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine. And all mankind shall know That I the LORD am your Savior, The Mighty One of Jacob, your Redeemer.

  1. When the hebrews left egypt (even though very few) bad elements followed along with them. The ones who left egypt never came back into the world because they were not obedient. Now is the time to correct ourselves and remove all those elements among us who do not belong and the time to rise is the next stage. Me believes that these holidays will be very very big and very very important and whatever happens or not, it is worthwile to prepare because redemption may only be months away. It is already very close and there is no denying that.

    1. You may be right. I've been hearing a lot of people saying that.

  2. jack - As far as those who did not come back because they were not obdedient is not true. As those who were not obedient and caused the sins were Erev Rav, which are plentiful today. The sin of the spies were committed by Jews. But, the other problems and mainly, the sin of the golden calf was purely an Erev Rav doing. We are in the midst of the cleansing now and that is why there is so much chaos in the Jewish world and in the world, in general. Also, those bad elements who left with the Jews (the mixed multitude, Erev Rav) were not very few but many like two million plus. nili

    1. It was supposed to be {those who never left egypt never came back because they were not obedient and this was before the erev rav were excepted and now they outnumber us by far.

  3. jack - where did you get the idea that the Jews who died in the plague of darkness and never left Egypt are the ones who are now reincarnated? It is the Erev Rav within our midst who are the troublemakers just as Chazal tell us. nili

    1. Nili, some say that the entire generation who lived at the time of yetziat Mitrayim have been reincarnated here at the End of Days, including all of the Erev Rav and also those who did not want to leave Egypt. And some say that those who are comfortable today in the West and don't want to leave it are those same souls who were here to make a tikun, but are instead repeating the same mistake. And the Erev Rav are just up to their same old tricks of trying to prevent the redemption from succeeding as they did the first time.

  4. Thanks very much, Devash, for reply. Didn't know that. At first, really didn't think of them as 80% didn't care and stayed behind.
Then their neshomos were also at Har Sinai for the giving of the Torah. nili
