Bibi's Choice on Gaza

13 Iyyar 5785
28 Days of the Omer

Will he or won't he?  Which road will he take - victory (too late for that) or capitulation?

In fact, it will be more like a choice between lesser or greater capitulation, because no way does he or his historic handlers and partners want to reoccupy Gaza.  He just wants better optics of the ultimate surrender.  He likely thinks he can still fool most of the public.  Here are  two options presently under discussion...

I think option 1 is a head fake.  I seriously doubt Bibi Netanyahu has any intention of following through on it.  On the other hand, he can likely get back into Trump's good graces if he agrees to option 2 and finally get the protestors off his back, if all of the remaining hostages are really released in one go.  Additionally, to give Trump such a coup in Gaza might sway him over to Bibi's side vis a vis Iran.

No guesses from me on where things are ultimately going with Iran.  That's one of Hashem's great mysteries!

[Feel free to share your ideas, but please honor my request to add a name to your comment.  I've been letting things through, but it's really not fair to take advantage.  I don't like to use the delete button.]

Can't vouch for the authenticity of this report, but it is food for thought...

Updates to last week's report...

India and Pakistan:  US is calling for a ceasefire,  Unconfirmed reports that escalation continues with India using cruise missiles on Islamabad.

Russia and Ukraine:  EU leaders in Kiev today - announce a 30-day ceasefire and demand Russia comply or they will bury Russia with sanctions.  Putin about to speak to the media, taking no questions.

Trump's ME Trip:  It sounds ludicrous, I know, but with all that has happened over the last 72 hrs, who knows?  This is out of the Jerusalem Post, which is a known US propaganda organ.

Which Haftarah Do We Read?

11 Iyyar 5785
26 Days of the Omer
Erev Shabbat Kodesh
Parashat Acharei Mot - Kedoshim

Haftarah History
According to the Abudraham and Tosafos Yom Tov, the haftaros were established when the wicked Antiochus IV (infamous from the Chanukah miracle) outlawed public reading of the Torah. The Chachamim of the time therefore established the custom of reading a topic from the Nevi’im similar to what was supposed to be read from the Torah. Even after the decree was nullified, and prior to the Gemara’s printing, this became minhag Yisrael.

Most haftaros share some similarity with at least one concept presented in the Torah reading. The Gemara Megillah (29b-31a) discusses the proper haftarah readings for the various holidays throughout the year, which are rather related to the holiday and generally trump a weekly haftarah.

Ground Rule Double
An interesting halacha that concerns us is which haftarah is read when Acharei Mos – Kedoshim is a double parashah, which also has ramifications for this year when they are read separately. Although the Abudraham cites two disparate minhagim with no actual ruling: one to read the first parashah’s haftarah and ‘the Rambam’s minhag’ to read the second, nevertheless most other Rishonim, including the Sefer Haminhagim, Mordechai, Ramban, Hagahos Maimoniyos, Shibolei Haleket, and Tur, rule to read the second parashah’s haftarah.

This is also codified as the proper ruling by both the Shulchan Aruch and Rema, and as far as this author knows this was accepted by all of Klal Yisrael. The main reason to do so is to enable reading a haftarah similar to what was just concluded in the Torah leining, which translates to the second parashah that was just finished and not the first parashah. So we see that generally speaking, whenever there is a double parashah, the haftarah of the second parashah is read, as that is the Torah reading that we just concluded.

Acharei Exclusion
Yet, when it comes to the parshiyos of Acharei Mos and Kedoshim, it seems that it is not so simple. Although the Shulchan Aruch does not mention any difference between these and other double parshiyos, the Rema, the great codifier of Ashkenazic psak, however, citing precedent from theSefer Haminhagim and the Mordechai, rules that the haftarah of the first parashah, Acharei Mos, is the proper one to read.

The reason for the uncharacteristic change is that the haftarah of Parshas Kedoshim, ‘Hasishpot’, from sefer Yechezkel, includes what is known as ‘To’avas Yerushalayim,’ referring to a revealing prophecy of the woeful spiritual state and the terrible happenings that will occur to the inhabitants of Eretz Yisrael for not following the word of G-d. The Gemara in Megillah (25b) relates a story of Rabbi Eliezer and one who read such a haftarah, who was subsequently found to have his own family’s indiscretions exposed. Ultimately though, the Gemara concludes that that haftarah can indeed be read, and even translated.

Hazardous Haftarah?
Despite that, all the same, it seems that we are being taught that whenever possible, we should try to avoid having to read this condemning passage as the haftarah. Additionally, the content of Acharei Mos’s haftarah, ‘Halo K’Bnei Kushiyim’ (from Amos in Trei Asar Ch. 9) has similar content to Parshas Kedoshim as well. Therefore, the Rema rules that when the Torah reading is the double parshiyos of Acharei Mos and Kedoshim, and as opposed to every other double parashah, the haftarah of Acharei Mos is read instead of Kedoshim’s.

Although the Levush vigorously argued against switching the haftaros, positing that it is a printing mistake in the earlier authorities to suggest such a switch, nevertheless, the Rema’s rule is followed by virtually all later poskim and Ashkenazic Kehillos.

However, it must be noted that this switch was not accepted by Sefardic authorities and when Acharei Mos and Kedoshim are combined, they do indeed read Kedoshim’s haftarah, ‘Hasishpot.’   (Source)

Three Days That Could Change the World

11 Iyyar 5785
26 Days of the Omer

May 7 - 8 - 9  India/Pakistan Conflict

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has vowed to respond to India’s strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir that were carried out in the early hours of Wednesday local time.

What that response entails may well decide whether the two countries are able to find an off-ramp or become locked into an escalating confrontation.

Pakistan claims it has killed “40-50 soldiers” by shelling Indian military installations along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border in Kashmir, in retaliation for Wednesday’s pre-dawn airstrikes by India.

At least 16 civilians and an Indian soldier were killed in heavy shelling in India’s Poonch district, which forced locals to flee the border villages, the Indian police said. Pakistan and India also said they had both shot down projectiles fired at each other’s military installations on Thursday.

Pakistan said it downed 25 Indian kamikaze drones, while India said it shot down 15 missiles. It comes a day after Islamabad vowed to avenge the death of 31 civilians in Indian airstrikes.

India said the strikes killed 100 “terrorists” as a retaliation for a massacre of tourists in Kashmir last month. Also on Thursday, French officials said at least one Indian-owned Rafale fighter jet was shot down during Wednesday’s “Operation Sindoor”.

The big question is where does it go from here?  What will be tomorrow?  The experts say they can each claim success and de-escalate.  Whatever happens next will indicate whether they will take the off-ramp or blow everything up.

May 8 - 9 - 10  Russia's Ceasefire and Military Parade

CNN — Kyiv accused Moscow of breaching its own ceasefire on Thursday, saying Russian forces struck hundreds of times along the front lines and launched guided bombs that killed and wounded civilians in several Ukrainian cities.

The three-day ceasefire scheduled around the anniversary of Russia’s World War II Victory Day on Friday was unilaterally declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin last month. It was meant to come into effect at midnight local time (5 p.m. ET) on Wednesday.

A statement from the Kremlin last month said that Putin ordered “all military actions” in Ukraine to be suspended from midnight May 8 to midnight May 11 based on “humanitarian considerations.”

Russian state news agency Tass reported that the ceasefire started as scheduled – yet the fighting appeared to have continued, according to Ukraine’s Air Force.

...The three-day period Putin picked for the ceasefire coincides with Russia’s World War II Victory Day commemorations, including a traditional military parade set for Friday, May 9.

The high-profile event is expected to be attended by the leaders of several countries that are friendly with Russia, including China’s Xi Jinping.
The Kremlin has released a guest list of countries and foreign leaders planning to attend the contentious May 9 Victory Day parade

Military personnel from 13 countries are expected to march through Moscow on the day of the parade. At least 29 world leaders are also expected to attend the event, Russian state-controlled media reported on May 6.

Troops from Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Egypt, Laos, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Myanmar, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam will march in the parade.

Twenty-nine foreign leaders will also attend, including those from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Burkina Faso, China, Congo, Cuba, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Guinea-Bissau, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Palestine, Serbia, Slovakia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.

Representatives from North Korea and Russian-controlled Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as defense ministers from 31 countries, will also be present.

Again, whatever happens tomorrow, and the day after, will tell the tale.

May 13 - 14 - 15  Trump's Middle East Trip

President Donald Trump will return to familiar ground in Saudi Arabia next week, choosing the kingdom as the destination for his first major foreign trip of his second term, just as he did in 2017 [Please click and read!] — once again bypassing the traditional allies who have usually hosted presidents.

The decision underscores a broader Trump White House strategy, prioritizing the Middle East’s economic and strategic influence over North America’s deep-rooted trade and security ties.

With an eye on blockbuster deals, a Nobel-worthy diplomatic breakthrough and the Middle East's role as a geopolitical fulcrum, Trump is chasing defining moments in a region that he has treated as diplomatic and economic cornerstone.

...Officials said the summit will give Trump a stage to outline his regional strategy and define the contours of US engagement in the Middle East.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is preparing to invite leaders from all six member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC): the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

Trump is scheduled to arrive in Saudi Arabia on May 13 for bilateral meetings, with the summit set for the morning of May 14. At this stage, no other Arab leaders are expected to attend, though that could change, one Arab official said.

After the summit, Trump is expected to travel to Doha for a meeting with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and then proceed to Abu Dhabi on May 15 to meet with UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed. The White House said that full details of the itinerary will be released soon.

This comes at the full moon and during the three days leading up to Lag Ba'omer.  No idea if that means anything or not.  But, the thing we need to watch for here is the negative fall-out it might portend for the Israeli State.

Israel vows to ‘defend ourselves alone’ after Trump strikes truce with Houthis

The US-Houthi truce sidelined the Israeli government, according to former US Middle East envoy Dennis Ross.

He noted that Netanyahu was left in the dark when the US began talks with Hamas in March and only found out about US nuclear talks with Iran when Trump made the announcement seated next to the prime minister in the Oval Office last month. The US-Houthi ceasefire is one more instance where Israel’s concerns were a tertiary consideration for the White House, if at all, he said.

Whether Houthi ballistic missile launches against Israel continue remains to be seen, but Ross told CNN that Israel does not appear to have been a major factor in the White House’s thought process.

...There has been no public criticism of the White House decision from Israeli officials. Netanyahu, who once openly criticized the Biden administration’s requests and policies, is one of Trump’s most vocal international supporters. Other members of the government have reserved their judgement as well, instead focusing on Israel’s resolve against the Houthis.

Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement on Thursday that “Israel must be able to defend itself by itself against any threat and any enemy. This has been true in the face of many past challenges, and it will remain true in the future.”

On the other hand, it's always wise to keep an eye on Iran.  They might do anything at any time.

Once again potentials and possibilities.
All of these situations have the potential to spark off WW3!

Gaza, The Unwinnable War

10 Iyyar 5785
25 Days of the Omer

In an interview uploaded today by JNS-TV, the podcasters discuss problems the US is having with Pro-Palestinian protests and how they are at a disadvantage due to a failure to understand the Middle-Eastern mindset.

There is, however, a failure on their part as well, to understand the Hand of God in these events and the destiny of Israel to rule after the fall of the West.

No one with this perspective is looking for (much less praying for) the geulah shleimah, so they don't have any understanding that the war in Gaza - as a means to "save" Western Civilization - is unwinnable.  The West is Edom/Rome and it is collapsing as I write this.  Mashiach will be revealed and he will conquer Gaza, the "West Bank" and the "East Bank" and the Kingdom of God will be restored in Eretz Yisrael and spread over the entire earth.

Consequently, this plan announced yesterday will not succeed.
Exclusive: US, Israel discuss possible US-led administration for Gaza, sources say

JERUSALEM, May 7 (Reuters) - The United States and Israel have discussed the possibility of Washington leading a temporary post-war administration of Gaza, according to five people familiar with the matter.

The "high-level" consultations have centered around a transitional government headed by a U.S. official that would oversee Gaza until it had been demilitarized and stabilized, and a viable Palestinian administration had emerged, the sources said.
They have quickly forgotten how the sea raged against their "floating pier" until it was demolished and they had to give it up after only 20 days of operation.  One of their men even died.

The Jews who are admiring of Western "values" and want to maintain the connection to it really are "Judeo-Chr*stians" - more Chr*stian than Jew.  Like the Hellenists who held similar views and like this modern American "Jew"....
Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry’s goes on Tucker Carlson and says, ‘I love Jesus Christ’

(JTA) — Four years ago, when the founders of Ben & Jerry’s took to The New York Times to defend their creamery’s West Bank settlement boycott, the opening of their op-ed read, “We are the founders of Ben & Jerry’s. We are also proud Jews.”

...Ben Cohen, the Ben of the pair, appeared on Tucker Carlson’s talk show this week, mostly to discuss his opposition to US involvement in the Ukraine war and the Pentagon’s sprawling budget, issues where his long-touted progressive ideals can overlap with Carlson’s far-right ones

Then, at the end of the hour-long show, Carlson asked Cohen about his “spiritual beliefs.”

“In terms of a spiritual belief, I mean, I don’t practice a religion,” Cohen responded. “I was born a Jew. I love Jesus Christ. I think the words that he said are wonderful, are amazing. And, you know, I’m kind of distressed that a lot of organized Christian religions are not really, I don’t know, abiding by the words of Jesus Christ.”

I'm pretty sure this one identifies as "Orthodox" -  Ben Shapiro: Judeo-Christian Values Made The West Great.

You get the idea.  It's more widespread than we think or want to believe.  If we don't start pointing it out and calling it out, how will they ever be able to do teshuvah for it?

All We Can Do Now

10 Iyyar 5785
25 Days of the Omer

I don't really have anything to say.  The State has run its course and is now a threat to the People of Israel.  The people in charge simply do not have what it takes to lead us onward to our ultimate redemption.  Some truly evil people in the security apparatus are persecuting the real Jews in the most humiliating and horrifying ways; in the name, and with the permission of, The State.

Large forces of Israeli Police and the Civil Administration raided Givat Or Nachman in Binyamin, north of Jerusalem, at around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, and completely destroyed the homes of the three families who lived there.

The demolition was carried out without any warning, and the children of the families were taken out of bed and forced to watch their home destroyed by a bulldozer. Arab workers were brought to the site to help with the demolition and removal of the equipment, but some of the families who wanted to remove additional items from the house were refused, and the kitchen utensils and furniture that remained were also shredded in the rubble of the house.

During the demolition, the Civil Administration also demolished the solar electricity system on the hill, which was the only source of electricity for the families. In order to prevent a Jewish presence in the area, the commander of the Judea and Samaria Division, Brig. Gen. Yaki Dolev, imposed a closed military zone order on Or Nachman for an entire month.

(Read the rest here.)

Make no mistake!  These actions come on orders above Netanyahu.  I don't need to mention any names.  All kinds of hints are being thrown out to warn us of worse coming in a matter of a few days.

A senior American official delivered unusually sharp criticism of Israel’s conduct in hostage negotiations and warned that the United States is prepared to finalize a regional agreement with Saudi Arabia, even without Israeli participation, N12 reported on Wednesday.

...“If until now they paid the price of not ending the war, today the price will be much heavier for Israel — and not just for the hostages,” the official reportedly told participants. “President Trump is determined to move forward with a significant deal with Saudi Arabia, even without Israeli involvement. The ceasefire agreement with the Houthis is just a prelude, and if Israel doesn’t come to its senses, even the ‘Deal of the Millennium’ will happen without it.”

It seems all we can do now is double-down on living like a Jew with all of our focus on Teshuvah, Torah, Mitzvot, Acts of Kindness, and endless heart-felt prayers for deliverance.  Everything else is out of our hands.  Our only hope is in HaKadosh, Baruch Hu!!

The Eliyahu Challenge at the End of Days

9 Iyyar 5785
24 Days of the Omer

Meet Qaim Aba al-Sadiq Abdullah Hashem - "the long awaited Savior of Mankind, the promised Mahdi and Qaim prophesied to come from the narrations of Mohammed and the Family of Mohammed."

I don't know if the Muslims will actually accept him as Mohammed's successor, but I can tell you that he's not here to reinforce the tenets of Islam, but to introduce a New Age for mankind with a world religion to replace all other religions across the globe.

No way it will fool real Jews who know that the Torah is forever, as is the covenant between HKB"H and Yisrael.

It's nonsense, but never underestimate the power of "nonsense" when it comes to desperate populations looking for an easy path to salvation.

Normally, I would pass on this, but I'm making an exception today because of a very unusual clip that was forwarded to me.  Some of you may already be aware of a seventh-century midrash that mentions an End of Days repeat of the scenario which took place on Mount Carmel in ancient Israel - a contest between Eliyahu HaNavi and the prophets of Ba'al.

The Eschatological Sacrificial Contest

In this narrative, the Jewish people and the king of the Arabs engage in a debate over the rightful ownership of the Temple. The king proposes a test akin to Elijah's challenge: both sides will offer sacrifices, and the acceptance of these offerings by God will determine the true claimants to the Temple. The outcome is unexpected and unsettling:

"Israel will offer a sacrifice, but it will not be accepted because Satan will denounce them before the Holy One, blessed be He. The sons of Qedar will offer sacrifices, and they will be accepted, for it is said, 'All the flocks of Qedar shall be gathered to you… they shall be acceptable on my altar' (Isaiah 60:7)."

Following this, the Arabs urge the Jews to convert to their faith. The Jewish response is one of steadfast refusal:

"Come and believe in our faith," they say. But Israel replies, "Either we kill or are killed, but we will not commit apostasy."

This narrative serves as a profound allegory, reflecting themes of trial, faith, and identity at the culmination of history.

Context and Interpretation

The passage draws a deliberate parallel to the biblical account in 1 Kings 18, where Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to a sacrificial contest to prove the sovereignty of God. In the eschatological retelling, the roles are inverted, and the Jewish offering is rejected. This inversion is often interpreted as a test of faith, emphasizing the importance of unwavering commitment to one's beliefs even in the face of divine silence or apparent rejection.

The reference to "the sons of Qedar" connects the narrative to Isaiah 60:7, which speaks of the flocks of Qedar being accepted on God's altar. This linkage underscores the complexity of divine favor and the mysterious workings of providence in eschatological times.

Additional Sources and Insights

While Pirqe Mashiach provides the most direct account of this narrative, similar themes are echoed in other Jewish texts. For instance, the Zohar, a foundational work of Jewish mysticism, discusses the role of the descendants of Ishmael in the End of Days, suggesting a period of dominance before the ultimate redemption.

Moreover, rabbinic literature often portrays the End of Days as a time of great trial and testing for the Jewish people, where faith and identity are challenged, and only those with profound emunah (faith) remain steadfast.

Now, compare it to this from an interview done about a year ago...

"The Four Oppressors of Israel"

4 Iyyar 5785
Erev Shabbat Kodesh
Parashat Tazria-Metzora

[Re-posting from 5775.]

Parashat Tazria-Metzora: Afflictions
by Daniel Pinner

The two parashot Tazria and Metzora are usually combined; only in leap years, and always in leap years (meaning seven years in every 19-year cycle), are they read separately.

Parashat Tazria starts by setting forth the rules of ritual uncleanness and subsequent purification for a woman after childbirth (Leviticus 12), then the rest of Tazria and half of Metzora give the laws of tzara’at. This is usually translated as “leprosy”, and metzora is usually translated as “leper”, but this is inaccurate. Some of the symptoms are superficially similar to leprosy, but that is where the similarity ends. Tzara’at is a spiritual affliction, not a physical one.

The Torah begins with the basic signs of tzara’at: “Hashem spoke to Moshe and to Aaron saying: A person who on the skin of his flesh has a se’eit, or a sappachat, or a baheret, which becomes a tzara’at-affliction on the skin of his flesh, is to be brought to Aaron the Kohen (Priest) or to one of his sons the Kohanim. Then the Kohen will see the affliction…” (Leviticus 13:1-3). The Kohen who sees the symptom, and only the Kohen, can declare the afflictee contaminated; and then, if and when the symptoms disappear, the purification process can begin.

The Torah uses four expressions here: se’eitsappachatbaheret, and tzara’at. Many English translations render these respectively as “a rising” (se’eit being a cognate of נשא, “raise up”), “a scab”, “a bright spot”, and “leprosy”, but these are inaccurate approximations. There are no precise English words for these terms, which is why some translations (such as ArtScroll and Margolin) simply transliterate the words, as we have done here.

Rashi (Commentary to Leviticus 13:2) says that “these are names of afflictions, and the one is whiter than the other”.

The Mishnah (Nega’im 1:1-2 and 7:2) defines the colours of these afflictions, which the Rambam collates as halachah: “Tzara’at is when a specific place on the skin of the flesh becomes whiter than the rest of the skin… Tzara’at has four visible signs: the brightest white, when the skin looks like snow, is baheret. A slightly darker white, which looks like the clean wool of a day-old lamb, is called se’eit. White which is slightly darker than the se’eit and which looks like the plaster of the Holy Temple is a derivative of the baheret and is called sappachat. And white which is slightly darker than the plaster of the Holy Temple and which is like the membrane of an egg is a derivative of the se’eit, and it too is called sappachat” (Mishneh Torah, Laws of Tzara’at-Uncleanness 1:1-2).

The Midrash (Vayikra Rabbah 15:9) sees these four symptoms of tzara’at affliction (se’eitsappachatbaheret, and tzara’at) as allusions to the four mighty empires which oppressed Israel:

“The se’eit represents Babylon, following ‘Raise up [nasata] this parable against the king of Babylon and say: How has the oppressor ceased! How has the arrogant one ceased! (Isaiah14:4)… The sappachat represents Media from which arose the evil Haman who incited [saph] like a snake, following [God’s curse to the snake,] ‘On your belly you will crawl’ (Genesis 3:14). The baheret represents Greece which distinguished itself [me-baheret] by its decrees against Israel, telling them: Write on the horn of the ox that you have no share in the God of Israel. And ‘the affliction of tzara’at’ represents Edom [Esau, Rome] which sprouted from the strength of the old man”.

The Matnat Kehunah (commentary on the Midrash by Rabbi Yissachar Ber Katz, Poland and Israel, 16th century) explains this last enigmatic statement. Edom was the descendant of Esau, who flourished because of the blessing that Isaac, “the old man”, conferred upon him: “By your sword you shall live, and your brother you shall serve; but it will be that when you will have a legitimate complaint, you shall overthrow his yoke from off your neck” (Genesis 27:40).

The Targum OnkelosTargum YonatanTargum Yerushalmi, and Rashi all interpret this to mean that Israel legitimately rules over his older twin Esau only as long as Israel obeys the Torah. But as soon as the Jews stop keeping the mitzvot, they lose all legitimate claim to rule over Esau, who is then justified in throwing off the yoke of Israel.

And the S’forno (Rabbi Ovadyah S’forno, Italy, c.1470-1550) adds: “‘…you shall overthrow his yoke from off your neck’, because you will indeed be skilled in warfare and capable of greatness”.

Therefore – concludes the Matnat Kehunah – “he [Edom, Rome] is the hardest of all exiles, like the affliction of tzara’at”.

Another allusion to these four oppressors is in the river which flowed forth from Eden to water the Garden, splitting into four headwaters – PishonGihonHiddekel (Tigris), and Euphrates (Genesis 2:10-14).

“The Pishon represents Babylon, following ‘Their horsemen spread [pashu] themselves forth’ (Habakkuk 1:8)… The Gihon represents Media… The Hiddekel represents Greece which was swift [kalah] and sharp [hadda] in their decrees, telling them: Write on the horn of the ox that you have no share in the God of Israel… The Euphrates represents Edom, because it broke faith with [heiphira] and distressed His children; also because it was fruitful [phara] and multiplied in accordance with the blessing of the old man [Isaac]” (Bereishit Rabbah 16:4).

The symptoms of tzara’at and the waters of the Garden of Eden: two allusions to the four oppressors of Israel.

The se’eit (Leviticus 13:2) and the Pishon river (Genesis 2:11) represent Babylon. The se’eit is the first sign that tzara’at might be present, though as yet unformed and unconfirmed. According to the Zohar (Volume 1, Chayyei Sarah 125a), Rashi (commentary to Genesis 2:11), S’adiah Gaon, and the Ramban (commentary to Genesis 3:22) the Pishon river is the Nile, the river which irrigates Egypt – the country of our primordial exile, the country to which Israel descended when they were as yet unformed, the country wherein they evolved from an amorphously defined family to a recognised nation.

The sappachat (Leviticus13:2) and the Gihon river (Genesis 2:13) represent Media. The sappachat, as we have seen, “looks like the plaster of the Holy Temple”. Media, which morphed into Persia, was the empire which both oppressed Israel and allowed them to return to their homeland. Persia was the empire which both hindered and allowed the Jews to rebuild the Holy Temple. So it is appropriate that the sappachat, representing Media, resembles the plaster of the Holy Temple.

Media (the Gihon river) was the empire which conquered and defeated Babylon (the Pishon river), which had destroyed the first Holy Temple. So it is intriguing that the Gihon river took over from the Pishon in welcoming Israel to the shores of the Red Sea: “Egypt chased after them and caught up with them when they were encamped by the Red Sea, gathering pearls and precious stones which the Pishon river swept from the Garden of Eden into the Gihon, and the Gihon took them to the Red Sea, and the Red Sea cast them to the shore” (Targum Yonatan, Exodus 14:9).

The baheret (Leviticus13:2) and the River Hiddekel (Genesis 2:14) represent Greece. Baheret is a feminine form of bahir (bright). Greece appeared to be the epitome of enlightenment with its philosophy, art, architecture, erudition, love of learning, music, legal system, and so forth; yet their rejection of holiness and their attempts at forcing to Israel to declare that they “have no share in the God of Israel” made them the epitome of darkness.

Similarly, though the word baheret denotes brightness and the baheret is indeed the whitest of the signs of tzara’at, it is nevertheless the harbinger of spiritual uncleanness. Like Greece, the dazzling pure whiteness is deceptive.

The affliction of tzara’at (Leviticus 13:3) and the River Euphrates (Genesis 2:14) represent Rome. Though the River Euphrates is the last of the four rivers to be mentioned, it has a special status: twice (Genesis 15:18 and Deuteronomy 1:7) the Torah calls it “the great river”, and both times Rashi comments: “Because it is attached to the Land of Israel it is called ‘great’, even though it is the last-mentioned of the four rivers which go forth from Eden”. By delineating the border of Israel it acquires its special status.

This follows the Midrash (Sifrei, Devarim 6): “‘Until the great river, the Euphrates River’ – this teaches that its greatness and its strength correspond to the Land of Israel”.

(Incidentally, this explains why the Torah calls the Mediterranean Sea “the Great Sea” in Numbers 34:6 – the Mediterranean Sea defines Israel’s western border.)

And then the Midrash continues (as does Rashi): “A common aphorism says, the servant of a king is a king. Cling to distinguished people and you will be considered distinguished”.

The Roman Empire and its successors indeed achieved greatness; as the S’forno (cited above) put it, “skilled in warfare and capable of greatness”. True – but sadly, Esau chose to make his greatness in evil, in opposition to Israel. Hence the Talmudic dictum: “If someone will tell you that Caesarea and Jerusalem are both in ruins – do not believe it; or that they are both populated – do not believe it. But if he tells you that Caesarea is in ruins and Jerusalem is populated, or that Jerusalem is in ruins and Caesarea is populated – believe it!” (Megillah 6a).

As much as Jerusalem symbolises Israel and Jewish independence, so Caesarea symbolises Edom and Roman domination. The one is bounded by the other. Like opposite ends of a see-saw, as the one ascends the other inevitably descends. Just as the River Euphrates defines the physical limit of Israel, which is the River Euphrates’ greatness, so Edom defines the spiritual limit of Israel.

That is Edom’s greatness.

Edom – the Roman Empire, the Roman exile – is symbolised by tzara’at. And tzara’at has two diametrically opposing characteristics: it is both a curse and a blessing.

Tzara’at can afflict both the body and the house, and a house afflicted by tzara’at has to be dismantled. This seems like a curse – but it can also eventually turn out to be a blessing. The Talmud (Horayot 10a) and the Midrash (Sifra, Metzora 5 and Vayikra Rabbah 17:6) record that when the Canaanites heard that the Israelites were approaching the Land of Israel, they concealed their wealth in the walls of their houses to deprive the Jews of it. When a house afflicted by tzara’at would be dismantled, the owner would then discover the concealed treasures.

This is the end of tzara’at: after the affliction comes the purification. The Midrash (Vayikra Rabbah 15:9) concludes its exposition on Parashat Tazria: “In this world the Kohen sees the afflictions; but in the World to Come – says God – I will purify you. Thus it is written, ‘And I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be cleansed’ (Ezekiel 36:25)”.
