    1. You could say that about any group of people. We judge them by their character. We are informed what characteristics to look for and anyone who meets the Erev Rav criteria is to be treated as such.

    2. The Zohar gives us a vivid description of the 5 types of erev rav, their primary characteristics and their fate. So it's fairly easy to see, not based on whether we like a person, but on how he behaves (in a consisway).

  2. Why would we have to be grateful to them? Everything is m'Shamayim, especially the tremendous role that the Erev Rav have played in our lives. They were doing their thing (also Amaleik tends to impersonate
whoever serves their interests). Their initial joining us at yetziat Mitzrayim was only to thwart all our plans (Torah, EY & Moshiach).
The Erev Rav Amaleikim are evil! The reason H' used them was to keep us on our toes and get us to come back to EY as a nation with
the approval of the nations of the world. But, of course, that was not the goal of the Erev Rav, it was the opposite; they wanted to erase us. They had a purpose and I believe their purpose will soon be finished and they will be finished too.
H' knows that His children Yisrael are good but had to keep us down so
not to assimilate and disappear amongst the nations and we were all
over the whole world, so the Erev Rav had their part to play which, in
fact, turned out to our benefit - all part of Hashem's Great Plan!
The Erev Rav were the ones to attach themselves to Esav & Yishmael,
so that we would, chas v'chalilah, mix in with them and that would be
c'v, the end of the Jews, Torah and even our connection to Hashem
Our tests are all from Hashem and we must hold to our Emunah and
Bitachon in HKB'H and nothing can ever possibly come between us or
undo our covenant with Him. Mi k'Amcha Yisrael!
