First Russian air strikes over Quneitra opposite the Golan
In its first sortie over Quneitra opposite Israeli Golan, the Russian air force struck Islamic State and Nusra Front positions Tuesday. Iranian sources noted that this was the closest Russian warplanes had ever come to the Syrian-Israeli border. The Russian jets also struck rebel targets the southern Syrian town of Deraa near the Jordanian border. On Oct. 9, DEBKAfile reported that the Russian air force was preparing to go into action over southern Syria and Israel was braced for Russian aerial intrusions over its Golan border.
U.S. Destroyer Sails Through Disputed Waters in South China Sea
A U.S. destroyer sailed within 12 nautical miles of artificial islands built by China in disputed waters on Tuesday in an open challenge to Beijing's territorial claims.
The ship did not encounter any resistance, but was trailed by Chinese ships during the transit in the South China Sea, a U.S. defense official told NBC News. It also triggered an angry response from Beijing.
