"THOUGHTS ON GUILT AND INNOCENCE"

By Roy S. Neuberger

It is the season of teshuva.

One of the tragic phenomena of the last year has been public accusations against many Jews. I have no ability or desire to judge, but I think it is important to understand the implications of these accusations.

For one thing, these incidents should strengthen us in our determination to adhere to the law of the land if it does not conflict with our Torah obligations. I learned from my father, whose career in Wall Street spanned over seventy years, the beauty and greatness of a "shaim tov." Everyone knew they could trust my father with their life and their fortune. He never would dream of using the trust of others for personal gain or in some devious manner. People knew this, and for this reason he was (and still is!) beloved and trusted. This type of behavior constitutes a tremendous Kiddush Hashem, bringing honor and glory to the Jewish People and to the Ribono shel Olam.

We are not living this way for public relations purposes. We should act correctly because we are children of the Al-Mighty and that is what is expected of us. We should not expect approbation or appreciation from the nations of the world, because we are not going to get it.

When twins were born to our parents Yitzchak and Rivka, Esav appeared first, covered with red hair "like a mantle." Yaakov Avinu emerged afterwards, grasping Esav's foot.

Ma'ase avos siman l'bonim.

The history of the ensuing millennia is a history of a world dominated by Esav, a hairy man whose entire being is consumed by his obsession for gashmius. Neither his perception nor his desire go beyond the material. His pious face is a façade. The lip service he pays to "religion" is only an attempt to fool his father. "In G-d we trust" is reserved for the dollar bill! Meanwhile, he tries - G-d forbid! - to destroy his brother Yaakov, whose entire life is dedicated to the service of the Ribono shel Olam.

"Esav sone es Yaakov." Esav cannot tolerate the goodness and the truth embodied in the life of Yaakov Avinu. He cannot tolerate a man whose every thought and action is based on emes. The "mitzvah" at which Esav excels is kibud av, because it embodies his attempt to fool his father. Meanwhile, Yaakov Avinu is covered in blood because at every moment Esav seeks his life. Such is the history of the past thirty six hundred years.

In a world dominated by Esav, Yaakov Avinu struggles to stay alive and serve the Ribono shel Olam. He is forced to "purchase" his right to the yerusha from Esav for food. And then, he apparently must resort to deception to receive his father's blessing.

The history of the world since the birth of Yaakov Avinu and Esav is a history in which the Children of Israel are constantly being accused of deception. Everything we do is viewed with suspicion and hatred. Of course, the more successful we are, the more the hatred increases. Our very acceptance of the Torah is associated with Sinai/sina, jealousy. At every moment, Esav waits for the opportunity to accuse. He acts the pious part, and we are constantly deemed worthy of shame in his eyes.

My friends, look at the history of Am Yisroel! Anyone who contemplates the Kinnos we say on Tisha B'Av cannot fail to wonder in awe how it is that we have survived! How did we do it? How did any nation -- let alone the smallest and apparently most defenseless nation -- emerge alive from the continuous holocaust that has enveloped us since the simultaneous birth of our eternal antagonist, Esav?

Truly, the existence of Am Yisroel is a challenge to the logic of Esav. According to his logic, after all his efforts to bring about "the final solution," we should not exist today. And yet, here we are! And we are still living our Holy Torah! It is a continuous challenge to Esav!

We should know, my friends, that in a world dominated by Esav, there will never be a day, a minute, a second, when we are innocent in his eyes. We will always be the deceiver, the one who "tried to steal his inheritance." It is a world as mixed up as the world of Sodom, where right is wrong and wrong is right. Our success and very existence is a testimony only to the continuous providence of the Ribono shel Olam, Who continuously protects us from Esav's constant attempts to destroy us. We are walking through a midbar of fire, snakes and scorpions, existing only on miraculous protection and food from heaven. We may not always realize it, but it is there constantly.

Esav marvels at this. How do the Jews survive? How do the Jews prosper? How could they be so clever? How do they continue to cling to their G-d and His Torah? They cannot understand, because their world stops at the border where gashmius ends. And so they MUST believe, or at least claim, that all of our blessings, even the gashmius by which we exist in this material world, come to us through deception and connivance. They must believe that "Israel lives by trickery, theft and deception." Otherwise what can account for our continued existence? And so, my friends, they view our every action with suspicion.

IN A WORLD DOMINATED BY ESAV, WE WILL ALWAYS APPEAR GUILTY!

What are we to do? This is the season of teshuva, and our answer is clear. Nothing has changed! "What can a person do to be spared the travail of the Moshiach? One should occupy himself in Torah and Gemilus chassadim...." [1]

Just as the Torah indicates that Esav will dominate for a time, so it indicates clearly that there will come a day when the rule of Esav will end and the words of the Prophet will be fulfilled. ""Was not Esav a brother of Jacob - the words of Hashem - yet I loved Jacob. But I hated Esau and I made his mountains a desolation, and his heritage for the desert serpents.... They may build but I will tear down.... Your eyes shall see and you shall say, ‘Hashem is great beyond the boundary of Israel."' [2]

Rashi tells us that "[Esav] will not have a chance to end his rule before the other [Yaakov Avinu] arises and takes it from him." [3]

Nothing has changed, my friends. It seems quite clear that we are not far from the day when "saviors will ascend Mount Zion to judge the Mountain of Esau, and the Kingdom will be Hashem's!" [4]

May we see it this year!

Police Brush Off Crown Heights Gang Attack
(IsraelNN.com) A 12-year-old Jewish girl was the victim of a racially motivated physical and verbal gang assault Tuesday night by a large group of 10-year-old black boys in a local playground in the Jewish section of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The girl’s mother said the group tried provoking her with verbal taunts and throwing a ball at her. After she threw it back, the group surrounded her, pulled her by her hair to the ground, and started kicking and hitting her.

According to one witness, who managed to chase the group away, one of the assailants slammed the girl's head into a metal slide and she briefly lost consciousness. The family spoke to police at the local 71st precinct who told the victim that her story did not make sense and there was nothing that he could do. The victim was then taken to a local hospital where an ER doctor confirmed that she had suffered a concussion.

Report: Jews Most Frequent Hate Crime Target in NY

(IsraelNN.com) A report by New York State’s Department of Criminal Justice Services revealed that Jews were the top targets of hate crimes in the state in 2008, followed by blacks, gay men, and Hispanics. The report analyzed crime data from police agencies across the state. Police agencies identified 596 hate crimes throughout New York last year and Jews were targets 36 percent of the time. Blacks were targeted 25 percent of the time, gay men 11 percent, and Hispanics 4 percent.

The New York City borough of Brooklyn recorded the most incidents, followed by Nassau County on Long Island, the borough of Manhattan and Suffolk County, also on Long Island. There were 64 convictions from the hate-crimes incidents recorded last year, and of those, "only 10 were convicted of a hate-crime charge," according to the report.

The Press Is At It Again With Its ‘Love’ For JewsAugust 25, 2009 [By Yossi Gestetner:]

The latest is from a NY Post story, written by Reuven Blau and published August 23. In the story, the writer says that “Rabbinical judges who sit on what are called “beth din” courts often handle cases that New York City Jews don’t want in the regular judicial system, such as matters involving tax evasion or other illegalities.”

I sent an email to the writer, which I think says to a reporter all he/she needs to hear after writing such a report. The email was as follows:

Hi,

You wrote that Rabbinical judges who sit on what are called beth din courts often handle cases that New York City Jews don’t want in the regular judicial system, such as matters involving tax evasion or other illegalities.

As a journalist myself, let me talk to you openly: I think you are ignorant of the Jewish court system (or perhaps you are just a blatant Anti-Semite). The issue of tax evasion will under no circumstances come before the Jewish court, because it is simply not an issue that falls under the Jewish law (beyond that us Jews need to follow the law of the land and pay taxes, with no two-ways about it from a Jewish court standpoint).

Get educated before you write a report, or if anti-Semitism is at play here, make sure that the anti-Jewish environment that pollutes the air at the NY Post HQ does not make you look like a fool again.

With no respect at all,

Yossi Gestetner.

Comments on the NY Post report didn’t fail to come. Some commentators wrote that if Jews don’t like the law of the land, they can/should go back to Israel. One person alleged that crimes done by Jews get “hushed up” through using the Jewish Court system.

The fact of the matter is, that the Jewish court system is mainly set up that Jews should straighten out their disputes (family or financial) within a Rabbinical setting, and in no way can the Bes Din rule on something that is solely a government issue such as taxes. Better yet, if the defendant does not show up at Bes Din, the plaintiff can obtain a ruling from Bes Din that will permit the matter to be taken into the regular courts. Even more, every ruling by the Jewish Court can – according to Rabbinical law – be enforced through the regular court system, if the parties involved don’t comply with the Bes Din.

All this information is common knowledge to everyone that knows the minimum of the Jewish Law and its court system, but don’t count on newsmakers to bother reporting the facts.

Hashem Chasing His Enemies?

Hurricane Bill threatens Barack Obama's vacation in Martha's Vineyard
Hurricane Bill is threatening Barack Obama's vacation as it heads towards Martha's Vineyard, after already cutting short Hillary Clnton's holiday in Bermuda.

The US secretary of state and her husband, the former ex-president Bill Clinton, were on Friday forced to cut short a long-awaited stay in Bermuda as the hurricane headed towards the British territory, bringing high winds of 115 miles per hour.

The Atlantic season's first hurricane - coincidentally named Bill - was bringing flood warnings and life-threatening rip currents across much of the Atlantic including Bermuda, where the Clintons arrived on Wednesday. Their stay only lasted 24 hours.

But Hurricane Bill may also be threatening the vacation of President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia, who are due to arrive this weekend at Martha's Vineyard, a getaway for the rich and famous in the northeastern US state of Massachusetts.

THOUGHTS FOR THE MONTH OF ELUL

From Roy S. Neuberger

Dear Friends:

Elul is here, the month of teshuva.

I had the privilege recently of visiting the Gadol, Rabbi Moshe Shternbuch in Yerushalayim. He said the following: "What is in the newspapers is of no importance, and what is of importance is not in the newspapers. We have nothing to fear from the president of Iran; G-d watches over His children. THE ONLY MATTER OF IMPORTANCE, THE ONLY THING THAT AFFECTS US IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE RIBONO SHEL OLAM AND THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL." [1]

My friends, I believe that every thinking person understands that Moshiach ben Dovid cannot be far away. Every thinking person also knows that the Jewish People are surrounded today on every side by problems. Even seventy years ago, when the Nazi dictator, may his name be ground to dust, was about to launch his war against the world, there were still places where a Jew could run. It wasn't easy, but the places existed where a Jew was not in danger.

Today, there is no such place. Even our Homeland, which was supposed to be the ultimate safety net for the Children of Israel, is under threat of attack, in fact more so than any other place in the world! In general, every Jewish neighborhood is surrounded by enemies, and the world is becoming more dangerous and unstable with each passing moment.

Several weeks ago, there was a terrible story in the news about religious Jews who were arrested. Pictures were featured prominently in the media.

I know a twelve-year-old boy in Lakewood, New Jersey, who is a tzaddik. I do not use the term lightly. It just amazes me how, in this polluted world, there could be such holy children. This boy taught me an incredible thing. We were discussing the quality of "dimyon," imagination. He told me that his rebbe had taught him that one reason G-d instilled the quality of imagination in mankind is so that we should be able to use it to find a way to "dan l'kaf zchus," to judge someone else favorably.

I personally find it very difficult to give someone else the benefit of the doubt. I think to myself, "How could that person possibly be innocent?" I have a very easy time blaming other people. This boy in Lakewood taught me something of great value: he made me realize that we have to work hard at trying to judge someone favorably and that G-d even gave us a specific character trait, imagination, to enable us to do it when it seems that there are no exonerating circumstances. I don't mean that we should indulge in fantasy to judge someone favorably; I mean that we should exert ourselves to understand just how that person could in fact really be innocent when in fact he or she seems obviously guilty.

I do not know the facts behind the news story, but I do know that the media is full of lies. I also know that any excuse to portray Jews, especially religious Jews, in a negative light is seized upon with delight by a world that wants to believe that we are worthy of their hatred.

In the month of Elul, my friends, we should be learning to look critically not at others but at ourselves. That is the only place where our efforts can have any effect. We can speak about the faults of others until eternity, but it will only create poison and darkness. Sinas chinom, unwarranted hatred among Jews is, according to our sages, the only reason we are in this seemingly interminable exile. Sinas chinom and its "children," loshon hara and rechilus, are the reasons that we do not have a Bais Hamikdosh today, that we are not all together in peace, harmony and safety in our Holy Land!

When are we going to stop?

When are we going to take this seriously?

When are we going to point the finger at ourselves instead of others?

On Yom Kippur we say, "Chattasi, I have sinned"! We do not say, "YOU have sinned"!

No one else is responsible for my problems! It's not the rabbi, the gabbai, the synagogue, the yeshiva, the economy, the president of Iran! It's not my wife and it's not my husband and it's not my parents!

I am responsible!

My friends, unless we stop blaming others, we will not be able to heal the world.

Let us all look in the mirror.

Tatti, my Father in Heaven, please let me see my faults! Please let me cry over my inadequacies! Please heal me! I have so much work to do! It seems endless, but I know that You will help me if I beg You with all my heart and all my soul!

Just remember, my friends: even if we don't deserve Moshiach, G-d deserves Moshiach! He is suffering so much at the quarrels of His children, at our terrible exile and His own "exile," because He is with us! He is waiting to save us! He has promised again and again, and He always fulfills His promises. Even if we don't deserve it, He will bring our Redeemer, "l'ma'an shmo b'ahava," for His Name's sake, with love. [2]

Let's give Him nachas! All the signs are in place. This is the month. This is the year! This is the time! "For G-d will comfort Zion. He shall comfort all her ruins. He shall make her wilderness like Eden and her wasteland like a garden.... Joy and gladness shall be found there, thanksgiving and the sound of music." [3]

More 'Flu News

About a week ago, we posted a warning---"Beware Big Brother trying to scare you into taking an unproven vaccine! " The whole situation surrounding this 'flu pandemic is bizarre.

At first, the Minister of Health said Israel would order vaccine, so it would be available if needed, but that we would not take delivery on anything until next year (2010). Next thing we hear the Prime Minister is vowing vaccine for every citizen and then the delivery date gets moved up to October.

I'd like to know who is orchestrating this and why. I mean is Big Pharma going bankrupt and need a massive infusion of cash from around the world, buying up a totally useless, but potentially deadly and experimental vaccine?? (I suppose you've heard that each person is going to need three injections!)

They tried for several years running to scare the world with a "Bird 'Flu" that never quite took off (forgive the pun) in the human population. Then they jumped to label this "Swine 'Flu" a killer when it had barely begun spreading in Mexico. Was it planted in the populace, quickly losing it's lab manufactured potency or were the reported numbers of dead artificially concocted and released to the media?

Take this for example:

62-year-old woman dies after being diagnosed with swine flu
Published: 08.18.09, 10:47 / Israel News
A 62-year-old woman died at the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem on Tuesday, after being diagnosed with swine flu.

The woman also suffered from other diseases. According to the Health Ministry, although it is uncertain that the H1N1 virus was the cause of death, this cannot be ruled out. (Meital Yasur-Beit Or)

Now, look at this:

Swine flu death toll rises following 10th victim
...The 67-year-old patient was hospitalized a week ago in serious condition at the intensive care unit in the Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikva and had apparently suffered from a severe illness.

The 76-year-old man suffered from a heart condition and was also admitted in serious condition to the intensive care unit at the Hasharon Hospital. Health Ministry officials claim that in these cases too swine flu could not be determined as cause of death but could not be ruled out either.

And yet if you only read the headlines, or do not read the article critically, the impression you would get is that these are swine flu deaths for a fact.
JPost reports: "...the ministry's policy is to attribute the deaths of those infected with H1N1 to the virus even when the cause of death is uncertain."
We have to ask why they so badly need to frighten the public with this manufactured 'flu pandemic.

Case in point. Just after reading that 'Nearly 1/4 of Israelis would refuse H1N1 vaccine', I ran across this Prognosis: 14,000 to die of swine flu .
I can't tell you what to do, but I will urge my family and friends to pay heed to the as-yet unproven, but highly likely connection between adequate levels of Vitamin D and immunity to the flu---Epidemic Influenza And Vitamin D.
Be a smart and informed consumer of medical care. Get plenty of sunshine and be well!!
