AJC Donating Funds to Help Rebuild Notre Dame

NEW YORK, April 17, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- American Jewish Committee (AJC) announced today that it will donate funds to help repair Notre Dame Cathedral, severely damaged in a massive fire.

"Whether Catholic or not, Notre Dame Cathedral is an integral part of our shared legacy and soul. It represents centuries of French and European faith, culture, history and imagination," said AJC CEO David Harris.

AJC, the global Jewish advocacy organization, is a longstanding pioneer in interfaith relations, and a longtime friend of France. AJC maintains an office in Paris. "We share the pain of the French people and Catholics worldwide in watching this landmark house of worship burn," said Harris.
In hearing the Passover story, have you ever wondered why so many did not want to leave Egypt?  It's hard to fathom, I know.  But, this is a perfect example of the kind of thinking that led to their ultimate demise during the plague of darkness.  Any Jew who donates to the restoration of a church or feels sympathy for its loss, is so stuck in Egypt that they are never getting out.
"Therefore, through this shall Jacob's iniquity be atoned for, and this shall be the fruit of his sin's removal: When he makes all the altar stones [places of false worship] like ground chalk stones, and Asherah-trees and sun-idols [Son-idols] arise no more." (Yeshayahu 27.9)

Rashi: Therefore: Now, too, with this, Jacob’s iniquity would be atoned for, to merit to be redeemed as then.
asherim and sun images shall not rise: So that they shall not retain their idolatry.

AFTER NOTRE-DAME FIRE JEWISH WORLD LEADERS EXPRESS SOLIDARITY
"The devastation of any place of worship is a tragedy."

In the aftermath of the devastating blaze that ravaged the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, Jewish leaders from all over the world have been expressing their condolences to the French people and institutions over their national tragedy.

“We were about to send greetings for a tranquil Easter to our French Catholic members and for Passover to the Jewish community. Throughout history, and especially under Nazi occupation and Vichy, synagogues were burned and cemeteries desecrated. We thus acutely feel the pain of our Christian friends at this time,” said the Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center Shimon Samuels in a letter to the French president Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday.

“The World Jewish Congress and our affiliated communities in more than 100 countries stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of France and the Catholic Church in the face of the unimaginable devastation of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, a blow that has struck straight to the heart of Paris,” World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said in a statement on Monday.

Solidarity was expressed also by the Board of Deputies of British Jews. “Our thoughts with Parisians and all of France. The devastation of any place of worship is a tragedy, particularly #NotreDame which holds a special place in the hearts of so many, especially Catholics,” the organization tweeted.

The president of Israel Reuven Rivlin remarked on the important role the cathedral has played in French culture and history.

“Our hearts are with the people of #France and the legends of @notredameparis, real and fictional, and we pray it will stand in eternity,” he tweeted on Sunday night, also sharing a memory of a recent visit to Paris. “I looked over the skyline of the city and the spires of the cathedral made it even more beautiful,” he added.

    1. This generation was raised without a Traditional Jewish Education that teaches Emunah(faith), Jewish Halakhah(Jewish Law) and Stories of the struggles that our Great Jewish Sages went through. What the Jews are going through today is nothing compared to what the Romans put the Jews through 2000 years ago. Then again history is repeating itself. 4/5s did not leave Egypt in the first redemption.

Jerusalem’s own Notre Dame lights up in solidarity with Paris
French flag is projected onto massive complex next to Old City walls; Mayor Moshe Lion offers Parisians ‘a warm embrace’

The Jerusalem municipality projected a French flag onto the walls of the city’s own Notre Dame center on Thursday in a sign of solidarity with Paris, following Monday’s devastating fire at the iconic French cathedral.

“The city of Jerusalem and its residents are saddened by the difficult events that took place at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. We extend our sympathies, and are sending a warm embrace to the French people from our capital, Jerusalem. For the next 24 hours, Jerusalem’s Notre Dame will be lit with the colors of the French flag,” Jerusalem mayor Moshe Lion said.

The hotel, restaurant and conference complex is owned by the Vatican and is located just outside the Old City’s New Gate.
