The Modern Myth of the "Blood Moons"

26 Shevat 5774

A leading pastor in the Messianic (Xian) movement concocted a theory about a series of lunar and solar eclipses which he claims will fulfill the prophecies of Yoel, chapters 2 and 3, and herald the second coming of oto ha'ish.  Once it was picked up and publicized by John Hagee, it became a done deal.  Now, good Jews are spreading it around. The clue to understanding the darkening of the sun and the change in the moon's color are given in the third verse of the third chapter and it has nothing to do with a series of standard eclipses.

Yoel, chapter 3, vss 3-4: "And I will perform signs in the heavens and on the earth: Blood, fire, and pillars of smokeThe sun shall turn to darkness, and the moon to blood, prior to the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord."

What is translated as "pillars of smoke" (תִימְרוֹת עָשָׁן) can also be read as Palm trees of smoke - what, in the west, they like to call "mushroom clouds."

The simple reading of the text leads us to think that these occurrences are happening simultaneously.  It stretches reason to think it's on and off and on and off for over a year or more. It makes much more sense that multiple explosions of nuclear bombs will give rise to atmospheric conditions which darken the sun in the sky and cause the moon to give off a red glow as if it had turned to blood.

Furthermore, the theory has been debunked by skeptics.

  1. That makes sense. There were some big fires around here that lasted over a week during the summer two years ago. The sun and the moon looked red through the thick smoke. It was very eery. Sound was different also. I just want to comment on the post I think you are referring to. EOD I sent it to my rabbi and he said. "This stuff is so Christian!" I didn't know how to reply. You've clarified. Thank you.

  2. Thanks for the feedback, Anonymous. Of course, the debunkers are xians, too, but the points they make are valid and logical. They did the research on the timing of the eclipses.

It just amazes me though how much the "mushroom cloud" looks like a palm tree.

  3. Thought you'd find this interesting. Not just one bird attacked the doves - two different kinds. The message? (Israel is the dove of course)

    Or a volcanic eruption.

  6. Yes, Shy Guy, you're right, but this scenario does not take into account the "palm trees of smoke." Also, the autistic kids have said there will be atomic explosions. Hashem yerachem!

  7. It's NOT whether he's right or wrong! He cannot be right! All such spectacles Hashem creates to address the sake of Jews. This Gentile cannot conceive a universe where the Jewish element is always the hero!
