  1. Hi, Yesher Koach on your blog!
I wanted to send you this interesting email I received from a listener.

    Hi Tamar,

I thought you might be curious to know, if you don't already, the name of the winter storm that is harassing the US. It is "Dion". In French, at least with the dialect my folks knew, it is pronounced "Tzion". I, along with others, believe the name comes from the French Crypto-Jews who were expelled after AD 70, or other Jews who ended up in France hundreds of years ago. Anyway, although I do not like to see people suffer and die in their suffering, I am encouraged by the name. I do not believe HaShem has it like that for no reason at all.

    Take care,

    Leila (from Maine)

  3. I speak French, but I've never heard that pronunciation. Never heard of "crypto-Jews" before the Inquisition either. Learn somehting new every day.

It's enough for me that in Hebrew, it contains the word "din" - judgment. And it's not limited to the US as you'll see in my next post.

    Thanks for commenting.

  4. Hi Devash,

Shalom!!! I'd like to clarify my comment to Tamar. The French Crypto-Jews were the result of the Spanish pogroms/inquisitions. When these folks were expelled from Israel around AD 70, they eventually made it to Spain. At some point my ancestors crossed the Pyrenees, mostly into southern and western France. Years later they embraced New France as their next home...and the rest is more known history of the French Canadians/Acadians. Although the story is well-known about the Latino Crypto-Jews, it is only in the last decade or so that not a few of us French descendants have been discovering our true heritage.

I apologize for the confusion about the French Crypto-Jews. The pronunciation of "Dion" as "Tzion" is probably found more in the dialects/accents closer to the border of northern New England and Canada...that's the way I've always heard it.

Thank you for pointing out the curious "din" in it. I was so astounded by "Tzion" that I didn't notice it. But, it's as if it is a double witness!!

    Shalom again,

    Leila (from Maine)
