A Dreaded Day

5 Tamuz 5772

Today is the day the Russian President Vladimir Putin comes to town. That will mean major traffic disruptions around my place of employment as he shuttles back and forth between his hotel and the PM's and Prez Peres' homes. The JPost reports: "Putin will be accompanied by some 400 people, flying in on four different planes. The massive entourage includes Putin’s staff, a large number of businesspeople and around 60 journalists."

Vlad Putin always attracts a crowd. He is but a distraction. The big news of the day is that Spanish short term interest rates just rose by a whopping 150% overnight. And everyone thinks that Germany is coming to the rescue. G-d willing the party tomorrow for the EuroTrash at their summit will not be pleasant at all. The Germans are not interested this year in an Anschluss in any form whatsoever. Just look at Angela Merkel. And she doesn't have a savvy businessman type like Sarkozy by her side anymore in France. She is in a bad mood. The first fast day of the summer to become a feast day is the 9th of Tamuz, not the 17th. The 9th of Tamuz was the day that the Babylonians broke through the walls of Yerushalayim. It is mentioned 3 times in Tanakh, and when Zecharia referred to the fast day of the 4th month, he was thinking of the 9th of Tamuz. The 9th is this Thursday night and Friday. G-d willing we will be saying Gut Yom Tov or Chag Same'ach.....if 5772 is the year of Geulah. If not, well we can go back to talking about traffic jams in Yerushalayim.
